My name is Emma Howden and I am a fully qualified Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), offering individualised and specialist Speech and Language Therapy services for children with a wide range of conditions and difficulties.
My passion and aim is to empower parents to support their child's speech, language and communication development through normal daily routines and play. I enjoy being able to help children who are waiting to receive support from their local NHS SLT team and working jointly with a child’s NHS therapist wherever possible to ensure consistency of targets. I can also offer advice and support to families and educational settings with regards to Educational Health Care plans and provide expertise and support to families who are going through the assessment process.
I carry out fun play based sessions with children in their home or educational setting
I work with children with a wide range of speech, language and social communication difficulties
I also work with children with a wide range of conditions and special educational needs

I worked as a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) in the NHS for 19 years and as an Independent (SLT) for the last 18 months. Throughout my career in the NHS, I worked as part of a multi-professional, Complex Needs team which gave me extensive experience in working with children and young people (aged 0-19) with a range of complex needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cerebral Palsy, Learning Difficulties, Global Developmental Delay and Down Syndrome to name but a few. I have been very fortunate to be able to work together with a team of other professionals including OTs, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Paediatricians and specialist teachers to support young people and their families in a range of settings such as special schools, pre-schools, nurseries, mainstream schools, child development centres and in patients' homes. Working independently has widened my breadth of knowledge and experience further as I have recently had the opportunity to work with children with more specific language disorders and high functioning ASD.
I am experienced in using a variety of approaches in therapy, including Makaton signing, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Talk Tools, Jolly Phonics, Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme, Intensive Interaction, Social Thinking and visual supports such as communication boards, shape coding, colourful semantics etc. I also have experience in supporting children with high-tech AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) devices. I am dysphagia trained and can assess and support children with chewing and swallowing difficulties or sensory feeding difficulties.
I hold membership of the Health Professions Council (HPC), Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP). I am passionate about working together with a child’s family and educational setting in order to ensure we can make a significant positive impact on their speech, language and communication skills through play-based, functional and, most importantly, fun therapy sessions.
"Emma has brought so much confidence and fun in to our speech and language journey. From creating new weekly games and activities, to creating homework resources. Emma has gone the extra mile in creating a safe and comforting environment for speech development. Our week just wouldn't be the same without Emma!”
Jess Nanny, Aldermaston
"We cannot speak highly enough of you and the work you have done for us."
Miss Allen Nursery Teacher, Bracknell
"My 6 year old little boy is on the autistic spectrum. He finds it very hard to deal with transitioning between activities at school and verbalising emotions. Emma has done a brilliant job at helping him. By introducing him to visual aids and strategies to build his confidence he can now talk and interact more easily with others making school a more manageable place."
